Big Eagle 5

Another welcoming shot. Good view of the PSP that made up the main parking ramp in 1966 and 1967. On June 28th, Captain Thomas H. Wolfe (Gombey FAC) rode in Nimrod 34 on a two-ship, armed-recce orientation mission along Route 912. Groundfire struck the A-26 while the crew was on a low altitude pass to drop CBU-14. After a brief attempt to climb, the aircraft crashed and exploded. The crew of Nimrod 33 saw no opportunity for the crew to escape from Nimrod 34, so no SAR effort was attempted.

In addition to Capt Wolfe, Captain Charles Dudley and Lieutenant Anthony Cavelli were aboard the downed aircraft.
