In early March 1965 the government of
Thailand
authorized the use of Thai-based American aircraft to strike into
North Vietnam
. With the start of
Rolling Thunder missions on March 2, the out-country interdiction campaign began
in earnest. Takhli and Korat were the two main bases for USAF
F-105s. B-52s at U-Tapao shortened flight times necessary for missions
flown from Guam. The Wolfpack of the 8th TAC Fighter Wing flew from Ubon.
Udorn aircraft included F-4s, RF-4s, SAR teams with HH-3s and A-1s, and some Air
Commando operations in support of the Laotian ground war. NKP hosted all
prop-driven aircraft including A-26s, T-28s, C-123s, O-1s, and SAR
teams.
